Happy World Chocolate Day!

Today, July 7th, we are officially opening the digital doors to 101Chocolates.ie, Ireland’s brand-new online destination for everything chocolate.

Whether you are looking for premium Irish-made brands, international favourites, or a monthly Mystery Subscription Box delivered straight to your door, we’ve brought hundreds of varieties together in one place

.

To celebrate our launch, we ran a survey of 1,341 people across Ireland to dig into our national chocolate habits. The results are in, and they prove that Ireland’s relationship with chocolate is deep, delicious, and occasionally a little bit secretive.

Here is what we found out about how Ireland eats chocolate:

1. We are a nation of chocolate hoarders

If you have a secret spot for your sweet treats, you are not alone. A massive 83% of respondents admit to hiding chocolate from someone else in their household.

2. Our gift-giving intentions aren't always pure

Bought a box of chocolates for a birthday or thank-you gift? Statistically, it might not make it to the recipient. The survey revealed that 76% of people have eaten chocolate they originally intended to give away as a present.

3. Move over, flowers

When it comes to perks and presents, chocolate reigns supreme. 65% of people would rather receive a box of chocolates than wine or flowers.

4. The Great Fridge Debate continues

We asked where chocolate truly belongs, and the nation remains completely split. The cupboard narrowly takes the crown with 51.7% of the vote, while 43.2% rule that it absolutely belongs in the fridge.

What else matters to Irish chocolate lovers?

  • Milk chocolate is the ultimate favourite, taking 66.9% of the vote, followed by dark chocolate at 26.8% and white chocolate at 5.6%.

  • Taste and quality rule. 85.2% said taste matters most when buying, and 70.5% look for quality.

  • Keeping it local matters. 25% of respondents prioritize buying Irish-made chocolate.

"We wanted to create one place where Irish customers can discover brilliant Irish chocolate alongside exciting international products, whether they are buying for themselves, sending a gift, or signing up for a monthly surprise box," says Derek Quinn, Managing Director of 101Chocolates.ie. "Launching on World Chocolate Day felt like the perfect moment to celebrate Ireland's deep love for chocolate."
